Sunset Dinner / Sunshine Skillet 2014

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of shooting the photography and video for the Sunset Dinner in participation with the 2014 Sunshine Skillet Food Festival. The event was presented by the Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance and featured a five course meal with each course prepared by a renowned chef.

Participants in the Sunset Dinner were Chef Ray McGuire from Desert Blume Golf Club, Chef Boonying Khumdha from THAI Orchid Room, Chef Ben Cherrett from Connaught Golf Club, Chef Pierre Lamielle from Top Chef Canada Season 4, and Chef Karine Moulin from Hotel Arts and Top Chef Canada Season 4.

The joy of shoots like this is that the artistry that goes into preparing each course provides stunning visuals to work with. The colours, smells, and lively conversation made the event really entertaining and engaging. I was constantly switching between cameras to capture highlights throughout the evening, and I'm really excited to have the photography and video from this event go public shortly. Here are a few photo highlights from the night - video to follow soon.

Adventures With Darwin

Every time I make the trip to Regina to visit Wendy and Darwin I'm guaranteed a good time. Darwin reminds me more of his dad (my friend Dave who passed away in 2011) with each visit. His mannerisms, his wide-eyed stare, and his limitless appetite are spot on, and it only makes the hangouts more entertaining.

Darwin took no time to warm up to me this visit, which makes me think he's finally starting to remember me. The moment I got to Wendy's place, Darwin immediately sat next to me and started talking my ear off (in adorable gibberish). At 2 and a half he's a master mimic. From 'cheersing' my glass and copying reactions, Darwin is a sponge and it makes playing with him a lot of fun. He even made a few attempts at saying my name - a whispered "ook". That "L" sound is tricky.

As always, Darwin was hilarious. A free slot machine app on my iPad had him jumping and flailing his arms with every spin until he was red in the face. Chasing him around Chapters, seeing him freak out at the dinosaur inside the Royal Sask Museum, and getting early morning wake up calls from Darwin wanting to climb on me were all par for the course. I loved it. And last, but certainly not least, there was the car ride where Darwin treated us to "Ho Hey" by the Lumineers.

Around the Hat Promo 4

This is the fourth time that I've created a promo for my Around the Hat photo series. The last one, which debuted in March 2013, went on to get over 40,000 views. As I'm starting to wind down creating new content for the project, I'm now focused on emphasizing just how much material there is. With thousands and thousands of photographs to work with, the series is richer than ever.

Mayor's State of the City Address

On Tuesday afternoon I had the pleasure of attending the Mayor's State of the City Address where he opened his speech with a video that I'd produced. He was kind enough to give me a mention, and also recognized our Thinking Hat exhibition (with Philip Vandermey and Jessie Andjelic) as it was on display at the event as well.

The video was a lot of fun to put together, and I found myself curating a diverse selection of images to make it happen. The City got approval from Big Sugar to use their song "All Hell For A Basement" which became the driving force behind the look and feel of the project. With the help of some interactive software templates, and hours spent editing unique combinations of my photography, the video took shape. I think we also met the challenge of making Medicine Hat appear warm and sunny in the middle of January.

I'm really happy with the outcome, as was the Mayor. I received numerous messages, tweets, and facebook likes after the video was screened, and even got a mention in the newspaper the next day. All around it was a cool experience, and nice to be in attendance to see one of my projects debut for a change.
