Battery Harvey Allen at Fort Canby

Having photographed a number of abandoned locations for my Around the Hat photo series, my fascination for places like this has only increased. Battery Harvey Allen was a place we came across by surprise while exploring Cape Disappointment on our drive up the Pacific coast.

Located at the entrance of the Columbia River in Washington, this battery was last used in World War II. The massive guns that helped guard the coast have long since been removed, but the abandoned battery is now open to the public to explore.

Lan Su Chinese Garden: Part 1

Walking through Chinatown in Portland, we made our way to Lan Su Chinese Garden. The location was beautiful, serene, and incredibly photogenic. For a few hours it was like we added another country to our road trip, and we happily soaked up the amazing visuals while touring the garden.

My attempt at Chinese calligraphy.

Chinatown in Portland, Oregon

Our hotel in Portland was right near Burnside and Chinatown, so it was only natural that we'd do a bit of wandering there. Chinatown wasn't huge, but there were some cool visuals that caught our eye. These were some of my shots as we made our way to the Lan Su Chinese Garden.

The best stories start with a road trip. True story.
