Updates have been sparse recently as my latest documentary project entered post production at the beginning of July. Hours and hours of interviews, stacks of archival material, and all of the other bits and pieces surrounding a project like this become a bit consuming.
All that said, I'm really excited to see this project coming together. This is going to be an interesting story to share about the historic clay district in my hometown of Medicine Hat, Alberta. It's a story that I was personally interested in, one that I hadn't seen told before, and certainly one that you won't find at the Medalta museum.
You'll have to excuse the lack of new photo sets in the meantime - although there are lots of those still in the works too. This new documentary is set to be completed by the end of August.

Production Underway On New Documentary
With principal photography kicking off just few weeks ago, things have been a blur as this latest Editing Luke project gets up to speed. It was only one month ago that I revealed the documentary had been greenlit, but since then there hasn't been a day without planning, shooting, interviewing, upgrading, and more planning in the mix - as you'd expect. I've been having a lot of fun so far and have already captured some amazing material.
What's the documentary about, you ask? Well, it's still a little early to reveal the narrative, but those of you who follow @editingluke on Instagram will have noticed quite a few clues as I've been filming around the Historic Clay District in Medicine Hat, Alberta. And no, it's not a history lesson on when pottery was booming in the Hat - not exactly anyway.
Production will continue through to the end of June with the project scheduled to be delivered / released later this summer. Obviously I'll have a lot more to share as all of this unfolds - like the picture above which was shot in the old Medalta factory while preparing for the very first interview of the documentary or meeting with this local legend. More to come here.

Editing Luke on CBC Radio Calgary
A big thank you to CBC Radio Calgary for having me on the Homestretch this afternoon to speak a bit about my hometown photo series, Around the Hat. The show was broadcasting from Inspire Cafe in downtown Medicine Hat, Alberta today, and reached out last week to set things up.
As I've said many times, you really never know where people will find you, how things will spread, and where the opportunities will present themselves when you put things out to be discovered. Around the Hat was the photo series that really opened the door for all of the North American travel shoots I've done since. After celebrating 5 years just a few weeks ago - it was awesome to reflect on some early work and share a few of those stories with a new audience.

On 2nd: Documentary
A downtown block in my hometown of Medicine Hat, Alberta. A photo series that began in 2012. A brand new documentary short born out of being in the right place at the right time.
On 2nd explores the recent evolution of the first block of 2nd Street in downtown Medicine Hat, Alberta. In 2012 I began exploring and photographing a lot of the vacant and / or abandoned buildings around downtown. Little did I know at the time, but a wave of renewal was about to hit and change everything. Here's a closer look at how it unfolded.
Bringing this project to life wouldn't have been possible were it not for the handful of businesses and community members who saw the potential in this idea and stepped up to help me make it happen. Thank you again to the following:

Ask Editing Luke: Vol. 1
Earlier this week I had an impromptu Q & A on my Instagram stories @editingluke. Having never done one on Instagram before I was surprised to receive so many questions - and by the end of it, have over 5K people see the updates. Here are the questions I responded to.

9 Places My Work Has Appeared in My Hometown
As a travel photographer who shoots images all over North America, it's par for the course that my work will show up in some interesting places from time to time. Most often it's with little fanfare - a business transaction or something my name isn't attached to - but hey, a sale is a sale.
When Editing Luke became a full-time operation in 2014, one of the interesting talking points when I traveled was the fact that I based my production company out of a small city in Alberta called Medicine Hat. While it's not exactly the middle of nowhere, when you're speaking to people who have never heard of it it can certainly seem that way. Perhaps surprisingly, I've found being from a smaller city has not only made it easier to standout locally, but abroad as well.
The last few years have been pretty monumental in terms of my growth online and the opportunities that have come my way. This is perhaps best reflected in the response and support my work has received in my own hometown community in that time. But words are cheap, so why don't I show you? Here are 9 places that my work (the photography of Editing Luke / Luke Fandrich) has appeared in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
1. Medicine Hat Airport
Unveiled following the terminal upgrade in 2015, this commission features a 12 panel display in the main concourse of the airport. More here.
2. Medalta Potteries | Historic Clay District
I've collaborated with Medalta numerous times over the last few years on various film projects and behind the scenes photo essays. One of my favourite highlights was being asked to create an original design that was featured on vintage Hycroft China and auctioned off during their annual Black and White Gala. The set raised over $3K for their community programming.
3. Medicine Hat High School
Last year I released a photo book called MHHS As It Was of my former high school prior to it be partially demolished / modernized. The limited edition photo book sold over 1000 copies and also lead to me being hired to shoot the final architectural photography when the new Medicine Hat High School was completed. More here.
4. Gas City Campground
This one was actually a bit of a surprise. After shooting new images for the Gas City Campground in Medicine Hat, Alberta this summer, I discovered they already had a large canvas of the Saamis Teepee that I shot hanging above the front desk inside the campground office.
5. Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre
I've frequently been asked if I've ever had an exhibition at the Esplanade, which houses Medicine Hat's premiere art gallery. I have not. However, I have collaborated with them on several film projects and actually had my work appear on the Esplanade's exterior during their 10 year anniversary. I photographed staff, community members, and volunteers holding up their hands as a sign of 10 years and one of these sets of hands ended up on the front of the building.
6. Boston Pizza
Earlier this year I was commissioned by Boston Pizza to create a collection of 15 prints for their new restaurant on Strachan Road in Medicine Hat. More here.
7. Canalta Centre
In addition to collaborating on several videos, I've had the pleasure of working as media (as Editing Luke) to shoot concert photography for events held at the Canalta Centre in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This has included a variety of musicians and Canadian icons, including acts like the Tragically Hip. More here.
8. Tourism Medicine Hat
From their travel guides and maps to the postcards they sell in the Medicine Hat Visitor Centre, my photography has appeared randomly in Medicine Hat promotional materials over the last few years. Because I'm not always certain where the images they've purchased will be used, this collaboration has lead to the most "hey, I think that's one of my shots" moments lol.
9. Local Homes & Businesses
So this one is pretty general, but since 2012 I have sold hundreds and hundreds of prints in Medicine Hat, Alberta alone. This has included poster prints, framed art prints, postcards, canvases, stickers, vinyl wall prints, signage, personalized photo books, and calendars. While some orders are pretty obvious, there's no way for me to track where all of the personal orders have ended up over the years. All I can say is that I'm incredibly thankful and humbled by the appreciation that so many have shown my work. There's really no bigger compliment than someone wanting something you've created in their home. Thank you, again and again.

Filming With the Medicine Hat Fire Department
Earlier this summer I shot a short public service video with the Medicine Hat Fire Department about river safety on the South Saskatchewan. If I'm honest, the real incentive behind taking on this project was getting out on the river to enjoy the views of the cliffs around Police Point, under the bridges, and down to Echo Dale. The views of Medicine Hat, Alberta from the South Saskatchewan River really are pretty spectacular.
Check out the video I filmed with the Medicine Hat Fire Department below and for more information about river safety in Medicine Hat, Alberta click here.

How a Schoolwide Documentary Changed Everything
I understand that it's no small statement to say that one project 'changed everything', but in my personal experience, that's exactly what happened when I agreed to take on what inadvertently became the longest shoot of my career (thus far anyway). For over a year, from December 2015 to December 2016, I captured months worth of footage while filming an open-ended documentary inside a newly built Canadian school. Here's the story in a nutshell.
It all started in the summer of 2015 when I took a meeting at Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre in Medicine Hat, Alberta. We sat down to discuss the idea of collaborating on an original project that would utilize video and photography in some capacity. The concept was loose, but essentially the goal was to document learning, collaboration, and to showcase the emerging culture of a brand new school. The funds had been made available through a private donor to do something just like this, however it was clear from the start that we would all be embarking on a big experiment.
Schoolwide Documentary: Clip #1
What none of us really knew at the time was how a project like this would evolve. While it was clear it would take months to create, I don't think any of us imagined how big it would become or that it would end up stretching over several years. I had a lot of other projects in the works at this time as well, but I still found myself in the school almost weekly throughout 2016 to shoot another classroom, interview, discussion, etc.
We truly embraced the unknown in those early months of filming. As things progressed a narrative began to emerge about the importance of collaboration, how education had evolved in recent years, and what learning looked like inside a modern Canadian school.
After filming wrapped at the end of 2016, editing began and continued into the spring. In early June 2017 a rough cut of the documentary was completed, screened, and received with overwhelming positivity and excitement. I'm glossing over what a daunting task editing a project with terabytes / weeks worth of raw footage actually was, but let's just say it was an experience. It seemed we were only a few final tweaks away from having the project go live and released to the public at large. Then we hit a roadblock.
The thing about working on a project with a timeline as long as this one was that there had been some major shifts between when we began shooting to when we finished. Pressures outside of the school, internal politics, the school district - I would love to tell you exactly what happened, but frankly, I still don't fully understand it myself. All I know is that the barriers that kept the documentary from a public release had nothing to do with anyone involved in our project.
Schoolwide Documentary: Clip #2
As frustrating as that setback was, too much had gone into all of this to simply give up. After months of back and forth we finally got the green light to share some of the collaborative clips that had been filmed around the school.
It bears repeating, this project would have never happened in the first place had it not been for the incredible involvement of the teachers, students, and staff at Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre who wholeheartedly embraced this wild experiment from the get-go. From class projects to impromptu interviews to candid scenes playing out all over the school, there was no shortage of enthusiasm (particularly with the grade school kids) when the camera came out.
On top of that, to be invited into classrooms, to participate in class projects, and to share some of my own passion for multimedia was a real bonus throughout this entire journey. I owe a lot to the lead team, teachers, and staff who helped to facilitate these experiences and link a lot of the moving pieces together. These few clips just scratch the surface of how much was actually happening. You have to realize, by the very nature of the project, this schoolwide documentary had a cast of hundreds.
Schoolwide Documentary: Clip #3
While the narrative element of this documentary has been archived, I'm proud to at least be able to share some of the collaboration that really defined what this experience was all about. When I took this on I never could've imagined what a profound impact making this documentary would have on my own creativity, shooting style, and outlook. Whatever small impact I may have had by simply being in the school, I was rewarded tenfold by the humour, ingenuity, and the willingness to share I experienced from the students of WLC week after week.
There's poetry in the fact that shooting a schoolwide documentary (that was never officially released) ended up becoming an elaborate life lesson. We all grew a bit in the process. We embraced an ambitious challenge and a rare opportunity to do something big. We turned a lot of everyday moments into art. And when it counted, there was no shortage of inspiration, ideas, or creativity to go around. Maybe it was all just a glorified work in progress, but in my humble opinion, that's how a schoolwide documentary changed everything.

On 2nd Teaser
The story of a main street, its evolution, and some of the people behind its recent revival is a compelling subject to explore. I set out to do just that with On 2nd, a brand new documentary short about the first block of 2nd Street in downtown Medicine Hat, Alberta. The project is set to release later this year on Editing Luke.
Featuring a handful of local business owners, On 2nd focuses on some of the strides that have been made in the last 5 (or so) years that have seen the street transform dramatically. Challenges certainly remain, but some of the achievements that have been made on this block may surprise you. Shooting for On 2nd is still underway, however the teaser can now be viewed above.

MHHS As It Was: Official Book Release
This weekend marked the long awaited release of my photo book MHHS As It Was. After months of work spent putting the book together, several months more of having it printed, and a month of shipments and deliveries, it's with a lot of excitement and relief that I'm proud to say that the book is finally out there and in the hands of all those who first wanted one.
The MHHS As It Was photo book features an exclusive series of images that I shot in 2015 and 2016 of my former high school in Medicine Hat, Alberta. It was part of a thorough exploration I documented of the massive building before the school was modernized and partially demolished in the year that followed.
The new high school which re-opened this September has now been completely transformed, turning a series of architectural photographs into a final archival record of where so many of us spent some of our most formative years. Significant portions of the old school had looked (largely) the same since the 1960s, so as you can imagine there were thousands of graduates over the last five decades who shared a connection to this place 'As It Was'.
It was with this nostalgia in mind that I set out to create this photo book. Originally I thought I could potentially sell a couple hundred copies to help finance the work that would go into the idea. It's important to note that this book was an original Editing Luke project. From the photo shoots to the proof and publishing costs to the promotion and pre-order sales, this was an entirely self-financed endeavor and not something that Medicine Hat High School paid me to create. That being said, the school was incredibly supportive of the idea and book from the get-go.
To say this project was a success would be an understatement. The response to the photo book, which was promoted exclusively through the Editing Luke website and social media channels, sold over 1000 copies while in pre-order. To put it another way, I had already sold all of my available stock before the boxes of books had even started to arrive from the publisher. For a local project as specific as this, one that people hadn't even been able to flip through the pages of yet, that was an incredible (and totally unexpected) achievement!
Orders for MHHS As It Was came in from across Canada and the United States, and were even shipped as far away as Australia. This weekend marked the final stage of the release where local pre-orders from all over the city were picked up in the brand new Medicine Hat High School.
With nearly 300 people coming through the doors on Friday and Saturday to get their pre-ordered books, it was an amazing opportunity to hear stories, sign a few copies, and even cross paths with some of my former grad class. To sum up the entire experience is difficult, but in a word it's been humbling. The support, the feedback, the number of copies sold, etc. have all exceeded the expectations I had for this project and I'm incredibly thankful. Really, thank you!
If you'd like to get your hands on one of the limited edition copies of MHHS As It Was the last several hundred books are available exclusively at Medicine Hat High School while supplies last. The books are $30 each and can be purchased in the main office or school store. They make great gifts, and are sure to have you reminiscing about stories you haven't talked about in years.
