A Travel Photographer on the Canadian Prairies

Over the last 6 weeks I've found myself scouring the Canadian prairies in an effort to make up for some of the lost opportunities over the last year and a half. While some of this was planned, the majority of these shoots snowballed as a result of the extended warm weather, overdue visits, and frankly, because I just seemed to be on a roll. This autumn has seen new travel shoots across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, with features in Winnipeg, Brandon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Calgary, Lethbridge, and of course, Medicine Hat.

Many of these shoots will continue to be added to the Hey, Canada series as they're completed, but below is a collage of some of the random snapshots from the last few weeks.

Getting Lost in a Lethbridge Corn Maze

Located just north of Coalhurst, near Lethbridge, Alberta, you'll find the Lethbridge Corn Maze. Complete with goats, sunflowers, and plenty of photo ops, this massive corn field features some impressively mapped out mazes to intentionally get lost in. The Lethbridge Corn Maze is really well done and makes for a fun and memorable autumn afternoon excursion.

Lethbridge Viaduct | High Level Bridge in Alberta

Also known as the High Level Bridge, the Lethbridge Viaduct in Lethbridge, Alberta is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It was built between 1907-1909 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, and is the largest railway structure in all of Canada. Spanning the Oldman River, this massive trestle has a total length of 1624 metres and is 95.7 metres tall.

Expanding the Around Alberta Series

Since 2014 the Around Alberta travel photography series has grown by leaps and bounds. From the Rockies to the prairies to the cities, this series has thrived on capturing iconic visuals from around my home province. Of course, a big part of the equation has also been about finding the right timing, a specific style, and highlighting ways to link a lot of unique locations together.

Alberta Travel Photographer2020 will hopefully be the biggest year yet for the Around Alberta series. With most of the older photo sets seeing updates and thousands of new additions in the pipeline, I'm hopeful that the new year will present more opportunities for collaboration and showcasing parts of Alberta that don't necessarily get the attention they deserve.

You'll already find lots of Alberta content to explore on Editing Luke, however if you're curious about the existing material, want to recommend a spot, or want to discuss an idea - by all means, you can reach me here. Expect some really exciting additions to the collection in 2020!

10 Architectural Gems in Alberta

When my Around Alberta travel photography series launched back in 2014 I found myself exploring a lot of incredible and iconic locations around this province.

Alberta ArchitectureShape, colour, symmetry, design, texture - some of my favourite highlights from the series have involved architecture. When I thought about sharing a few pictures from the archive, these were 10 spots (among numerous others) that sprung to mind. How many have you explored / visited yourself? See if you can identify these 10 architectural gems found around Alberta. If there are a few spots you don't recognize you'll find the locations listed at the bottom of this post.
