Ford Piquette Avenue Plant: Part 1

Constructed in 1904, the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit, Michigan was the second home of the Ford Motor Company, and most notably, the birthplace of the Ford Model T. On the third floor in the northwest corner of the Piquette Avenue Plant was Henry Ford's office, and it was here in 1907 that along with a small team of draftsman and engineers, that plans were developed for a car that would end up changing the world.

The first production Model T was built at the Piquette Avenue Plant on September 27, 1908. Between 1904-1910, Ford assembled upscale Models B and K, and entry level Models C, F, N, R, S and T here. By 1910 Ford had already outgrown the factory, and after producing nearly 12000 Model Ts at the Piquette Avenue Plant, Henry Ford moved the operation to a new facility in Highland Park, Michigan. It was there that he developed the moving assembly line in 1913-1914, and would go on to produce 15 million Ford Model Ts.

Today the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is a museum with an impressive collection of classic automobiles from the early years of Detroit's booming auto industry. Here you can see the iconic Model T up close, and walk the same floors that Henry Ford once did. The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is the oldest automotive factory building in the world that's open to the public.

The 5 Point Cafe in Seattle, Washington

Always on the hunt for a restaurant / bar with character, we stumbled into the 5 Point Cafe in Belltown for breakfast on route to the EMP. Owning the distinction with pride, the 5 Point Cafe is supposedly one of the best dive bars in Seattle, Washington. Is it? I have no idea, but the food was good, the character was a plus, and the soup of the day was whiskey.

Bank & Baron Pub in Calgary, Alberta

Located in the former Bank of Nova Scotia along Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary, Alberta, the Bank & Baron Pub is a trendy spot to grab a drink and a bite to eat. A grand ceiling, ornate fixtures, and dark wood all suit the throwback aesthetic, and it's easy to fall in love with the historic bank's architecture when you can admire it with a beer in hand.

I stopped in amidst shooting my Calgary ghosting series, and the backdrop couldn't have been more fitting. In places like this it's all about the details. With Calgary's downtown core dominated by steel and glass it's a treat to find a space that so appropriately suits the local history and charm of Stephen Avenue. The Bank & Baron has that in spades.
